| 520 | _aWhen the first edition of this book was published in 2001, the airport industry had received relatively little attention in the published lit-erature and had been very very much overshadowed by the airline sector. Hence this was the motivation for writing the book. Shortly after the publication, the airport sector had to cope with the unparalleled con-sequences of the events of 9/11, the Iraq War, the outbreak of SARS and the continuing threat of terrorism. These were consequently considered in the second edition which was published in 2003. At the time of writing this edition, it was unclear what the longer term impacts of these events would be. Five years on it can be concluded that they have proved to be a significant turning point for the indus-try and since then it has been operating in a much more volatile and uncertain environment. This is not just directly due to increased secu-rity concerns, but also because of changing airline structures, unprec-edented fuel price rises and increased environmental pressures. | ||
