In that time ecotourism has been transformed both within tourism studies and more widely in the tourism industry. In the academic realm there has been an exponential growth in the publication of books on the topic of ecotourism, and in 2002 the first edition of the Journal of Ecotourism was published; 2002 was also proclaimed the International Year of Ecotourism by the United Nations. In his opening address marking the occasion, the World Tourism Organization (WTO) Secretary-General Francesco Frangialli noted the increasing growth of the ecotourism industry, and the prominent role ecotourism will play around the world in securing the future of the tourism industry.
