Management challenges : solving real-life cases - Singapore ASIAPAC books 2009 - 184 p. ; ill.

This book is a collection of some of my articles and case studies published in Today's Manager, the official business and management magazine of the Singapore Institute of Management. Human beings are unpredictable creatures both at work and at play. Some are magnanimous, ever ready to share their knowledge, while others protect their turf jealously and only work towards their personal advancement. Thus, we see the workplace as a menagerie where the inhabitants indulge in antics in their daily routines and where the law is based on the concept of the survival for the fittest. In my career, I've been fortunate to work for companies owned by various nationalities. I spent a third of my working life in the education service, where 1 slaved under an assortment of principals, some of whom demanded respect and treated recruit teachers with contempt. But in the last year before they were due to receive their pensions, they became angels and pleaded with the teachers not to give them any trouble. To be fair, there were also principals who were leaders and treated their staff with respect. From them, I learnt that humility is an important attribute for managers.
