Language planning and policies predate any serious effort to systematically examine their impact within society. The research and concepts that are necessary for successful language planning are relatively recent. Linguistic assimilation is a phenomenon that is still poorly understood by the general public but one that generates a good deal of discussion, frequent emotion and occasional alarmist remarks. This book tries to bring a certain 'objectivization' to the phenomenon of the linguistic assimilation.
