Summary: This is a new book whose origins are in a 1996 work entitled Building Secure and Reliable Network Applications. This earlier book eventually went out of print, and when I set out to revise it during the summer of 2003, I quickly recognized that a tremendous amount of material was outmoded. This new (shorter) text retains some material from the earlier one, but drops some of the old content and includes a treatment of such recent topics as Web Services, Grid Computing and Autonomic Computing.
