Summary: I did not start out to become a sociologist. Guided by teachers and counselors who pointed to my good grades in mathemat-ics and physics, I applied to and entered engineering school. The first year went well enough. Early in my sophomore year, however, I realized that I had lost my interest in engineering. To be honest, my school was also quickly losing its interest in me, and my engineering career came to a crashing halt soon after I posted a grade point average of 1.3 for the fall sernester.
