The essays in this book represent only one step in the attempt to address the complex questions of 'Asianness', 'Asia', and the 'Asian community'. At the economic and geo-political level, a recognition of commonality, at least of economic and strategic interests, is visible in the formation of bodies such as ASEAN and SAARC, but at the level of people to people contact, at an intellectual level, these networks are only now beginning to form, but despite their recent history, their value and importance is already evident. It is our hope that this book, in which the AFLP community offers you some of its thoughts on these subjects, will go someway towards making a contribution-albeit small-to this important debate.
