Summary: It seemed to me that a thorough grounding in biological principles would bring about an appreciation of the structure and function of individual organisms, how they have evolved, and how they interact in the biosphere. This led me to use the levels of biological organizatio as my guide; thus, the book begins with chemistry and ends with the biosphere. Students need to be aware that our knowledge of biology is built on scientific discovery. The first chapter explains the process of science and thoroughly reviews examples of how this process works. Throughout the text, biologists are introduced and their experiments are explained. An appreciation of the scientific process should include the perception that without it, the study of biology would not exist.
