520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc. This book is written according to the syllabi designed by the University of Burdwan, Calcutta, North Bengal, Vidyasagar, Kalyani, West Bengal University of Technology and as a whole almost all the universities in India, where Probability and Statistics is included in the Degree (Honours and Gen-eral) Level and also in Plus two Courses. Maximum care has been taken in preparing the chapters through the inclusion of different topics, which are com-monly discussed by the teachers in their lectures within the classroom, supported by some suitable illustrations. After each chapter an exercise is given, covering sufficient number of problems mostly from the university questions of the previous years and on related topics, in order to make the students mentally equipped for examinations. Regarding the subject matter, no originality is claimed; the author rather claims the simplicity about the orientation of the subject matter and about the emphasis and importance paid to the different topics. In some preliminary chapters the discussion has been purposely curtailed down on the basis of experience of teaching Mathematics and Statistics in the undergraduate level, over long years. It is felt that the students feel generally embarrassed while going through those chapters in details. So only salient features of those chapters have been touched. Discussions on the origin and development of the subject are shortly focussed just to make the students aware of the glorious past of the subject. The author is mostly indebted to Prof. D. N. Elhance, for the short history on the develop-ment of Statistics and to Prof. J. V. Uspensky for the deve-lopment part of the Probability. In the miscellaneous exercise, the most probable ques-tions on the Higher Secondary Syllabus are incorporated. Students of the H.S. Section are advised to follow the exercise carefully. Humble submission is due to the fact that in spite of utmost sincerity and care, there might have remained some slips, termed as mistakes. The author will appreciate and acknowledge every kind of suggestion regarding the im-provement of this volume.
